intercepted by u.s. intelligence. the plan reportedly modelled after the 2008 mumbai attacks, remember those in india and set to focus on western tourists staying in france, england and germany. julie kirtz is live in washington for us with the developing details. >> that's right. western intelligence agencies had credible intelligence that mumbai style attack was planned to target western tourists, as you said, likely americans staying in western hotels in france, england and germany. the attackers were allegedly of pakistani or algerian origin and trained in pakistan's tribal areas. u.s. intelligence decided to leak the information according to one source as a disruption tactic. the threat was credible and the concern was that it would evolve. at this point, there have been no arrests, gretchen, according to our information, officials are still working to investigate this plot. a big concern is that the plotters were modeling their european assault on the 2008 attack in mumbai, india, when armed gunmen, as you remember, killed more than 200 people in coordinated attacks there. several sour

. they are out there putting their lines on the line for us. we have to make sure that we are crystal clear for our sakes and their sakes, they are americans. we honor their service. and part of honoring their service is making sure they understand that we don't differentiate between them and us. it is just us. >> david, he could have shyed away or given shorter answers knowing there is an election 53 days away and this is quick sand perhaps and he was passionate about the issues remembering that he is president well past that election in 53 days. >> john, he seemed to resolve whatever internal doubts he may have had about this issue and come out four square and spoke from the heart and from his soul on this. i do think that he deserved points for courage given the polls and how upset many americans are. i think that he gave what is one of the best arguments that i have heard for placing the mosque here. what surprised me as well is that i thought that given what the imam's conversation with cnn a couple of nights ago in which he said, look, if i had known what i know now, i would not have

>> there you go, thanks for inviting us into your home. that's the issue of the report, fair, balanced and unafraid. s s s s s s s s s se comes that guy. >> "the o'reilly factor" is on. tonight. >> the biggest attack ever that took place on our soil. we absorbed and we are stronger. >> president obama said that to bob woodward and now some critics are saying it indicates he's not fully committed to preventing future terrorist attacks. mr. woodward will be here to respond: >> who is this guy? >> i have no idea. >> do you know who this is. >> i have no idea. >> john stossel says some americans should not vote. they're too dumb. stossel will explain. >> the obama administration continues to drop missiles on suspected terrorists even as the aclu and others try to get that strategy outlawed. is it legal? has been investigated? caution, you are about to enter the "no spin zone." "the factor" begins right now. >>> hi, i'm bill o'reilly. thank you for watching. president obama and war, that is the subject of this evening's talking points memo. there's a lively debate about how commit

next to us and then ours was third to go. >> the area is very steep and rugged. it could take several days to get that fire under control. illegal immigrants who cannot get into the u.s. by land coming by sea? authorities just arrested 20 mexicans at san clemente state beach in originange county, california. one woman broke her leg jumping from the boat. meanwhile, the daredevil known as skyscraper man is at it again. dan goodwin climbed up the 58-story millennium tower using suction cups. >> crazy. >> some residents even toasted his climb as they watched him through the windows of their luxury apartments? it's great entertainment really. he was arrested after he reached the top. he calls himself spider dan appropriately raising awareness of the vulnerability of skyscrapers to terror attacks. > >> thing is you get tired of waiting for the elevators with suction cups and then at the last minute will come down. >> meanwhile, president obama detailing his latest idea to jump-start the economy and create jobs with a $50 billion infrastructure spending free and tomorrow the president will

at that closed door meeting with the president. what have you learned? >> democratic congressional leaders used that strategy session at the white house today to press the president to be more aggressive in helping them campaign in the final weeks before november's elections. i'm told that house speaker nancy pelosi spoke up and said the congressional democrats really want to see him do more of the kind of rally he held in wisconsin this week where he amped up the rhetoric for democratic policies and against republicans especially when it comes to the issue of jobs and the economy. i'm told that in this meeting, the president made clear there would be more campaign events coming, more are already actually on the books beyond the three rallies that have been as publicly in neve metro, pennsylvania, ohio. these sources we talked to insist the tone of the meeting was not hostile. however, democratic congressional leaders did want to hear the promise directly from the president's lips he was going to help them. i can tell you that congressional democratic sources i talked to for some timex pressed

. >> they are trying to figure us out. they should keep news two separate places, i do believe. good to see you guys this morning. you will have a good one. we are going to pick up on what they were talking about there. this hurricane, massive hurricane. hurricane earl. it is making its way. there it is. it is big, powerful and going to be a menace. we don't know how big of a menace just yet. the east coast, literally from the carolinas to maine. you just heard from kiran, some evacuations are getting under way. more could be coming. we are your hurricane headquarters. we will be live for you along the coast. have the very latest for you with our jacqui jeras who is here as well. it is never too early to start saving for college. it is getting more and more esses expense ive. look at these little guys. they are putting money into the bank for their college tuition they are going to use in about 13 years or so. we will explain that. >>> again, we are your hurricane headquarters. the talk about this hurricane, hurricane earl right mao. it is a category 3. it went from category 4 to category 3. do not

-northeast. eventually we'll see it as a trough that's going to bring us that beautiful weather this weekend. a trough is going to pick this storm up and turn it out to sea. the pressure has risen 955 mill ibars. i want to tell you where this storm is going to go within the next 24 hours. there we are as we head further out in time to around 3 p.m. just offshore here of eastern long island and then as we go into friday night, there's boston, cape cod and the islands. it looks like this storm is just going to brush them which is really great news. there was concern they were going to take a direct hit but we're fairly confident now this is not going to be impacting cape cod and the islands like it could have been yesterday. so there's your path again as of 5 a.m. and the bulk of this storm really staying offshore which is great news, not to say we're not going to see the effects of the storm surge, rain, gusty winds. kind of like a nor'easter. this is what earl should be and thank goodness, just a bit of a sigh of relief this morning. >> all my friends are so excited that they're still getting to go on

-qaeda and the taliban by using drone missile attacks. in fact, reports today say those attacks are increasing because of al-qaeda threats against western europe. so it's hard to say exactly what kind of passion president obama has for the war on terror. and in an interview with bob woodward, he muddied the waters even further. >> i said very early on as a senator and continued to believe as a presidential candidate and now as president that we can absorb a terrorist attack. we'll do everything we can to prevent it, but even the 9-11, even the biggest attack, that ever took place on our soil, we absorbed it and we are stronger. this is a strong, powerful country that we live in and our people are incredibly resilient. >> that quote is contained in the new book and the words have drawn anger from those who dislike the president's policies. >> i think that may be the most outrageous thing that's been reported about this book. how can an american president say that as if he's a detached observer and doesn't care about americans dying? >> talking points did not draw that inference from the statement. i th

about iran. she joins us in her very first interview before addressing the general assembly and meeting all the other delegates. susan rice, thank you so much. iran again challenging the u.n. watchdog saying it is operating illegally, has no right to crack down. he's also saying the u.n. sanctions are having no effect, the effect of an interview -- in one interview he says it was a spoiled kleenex. what is your best information on how to deal with iran and whether these sanctions are having any effect? because certainly in his public statements skand iran's behavio it doesn't seem to have stepped back. >> you wouldn't expect the leader of iran to come ask say the sanctions are killing me. but with all the evidence we've seen, these have proven to be the toughest set of sanctions. u.n. community has ever imposed on iran and they're having difficulty as well as having iran move ships to acquire access to banking. they came in three categories. first, that that we passed at the united nations securities council. then the european union came behind, as did japan and south korea, others, can

face to face for peace talks in washington, beginning of a year long process. doug lazader joins us from washington, d.c. what kind of start did we get off to yesterday? is there any peace yet? >> well, there's peace at the white house. there will be peace around the table today, let's hope anyway. these talks are going to last a few hours. everyone at this point seems to be saying the right things but the details are where this process typically begins to fall apart. now, all of the major players did gather last night peacefully at the white house for this dinner. they're starting the gathering standing side by side. you see the president walking up to the podium. president obama was flanked by all the key players in mideast peace calling for the israeli and palestinian leaders to set aside their differences. >> we must ask, do we have the wisdom and the courage to walk the path of peace? >> well, the answer is not so easy. especially in the wake of two attacks this week on israelis carried out by hamas. still, the process moves forward with the goal of creating a palestinian sta

. >> thank you, ted. it's great to be here with larry, barry and terry. thank you all for watching us tonight. i have -- done so much. i just cannot believe that we have changed everything since i've become your governor in the last 600 days. arizona has been brought back from its abyss. we have cut the budget. we have balanced the budget and we are moving forward. we have done everything that we could possibly do. we have -- did what was right for arizona. i will tell you that i really did the very best that anyone could do. >> since i behad come -- unfortunately for brewer that ten-second period of silence might have been her most effective use of time all night. her claim of a balanced budget was false. brewer's democratic opponent took her to task for the budget lie. he also went after the governor for her anti-immigrant fear mongering over the summer when she was claiming they needed sb-1070 to prevent beheadings in the desert. >> which beheadings were you referring to? >> law enforcement agencies have found bodies in the desert, either buried or lying out there that have been beheaded.

the pressure on as long as we can. the u.s. officials say the threats come from a variety of sources. bill: i'm losing count here, how many strikes in the past few weeks, steve. >> reporter: it's hard to count exactly. they don't give us the exact numbers, but there has been some assessment over there, according to the "wall street journal" there have been at least 20 drone strikes so far this month in the tribal regions of pakistan, that's across the border inside pakistan, the highest monthly toelt in the last six years. the necessity was hammered home during a recent congressional hearing on terror. >> today al-qaida and are in pakistan is at one of its weakest points, i would stress that the group has time and time again proven its resill lens and remains a very capable and determined area. >> reporter: the cia doesn't confirm or talk about the strikes, it is no secret it takes place. they say when conditions allow us to act in strict accord with the law we do. that's the bottom line. bill: a good reminder this war is far from over. we've seen the highest number of attacks by drones in pa

>> that's all for now. i'm chris hansen. for ann curry and all of us at nbc news, thanks for watching. >>> this sunday, the politics of the economy. have americans lost faith in the president and his party to dig the country out of recession? >> the hole the recession left was huge. the progress has been painfully slow. millions of americans are still looking for work. >> can the white house d anything before november to put people back to work? and who is right in the debate about your taxes? i'll explore the president's thinking and go inside the white house's campaign strategy with senior adviser to the president, david axle rod. then, nine years after 9/11, what's behind the new wave of anti-muslim sentiment in america? has the president helped or hurt by wading into controversies about an islamic community center and mosque in lower manhattan and a florida's pastor threat to burn a holy koran. an exclusive interview with former mayor of new york city and 2008 presidential candidate, rudy giuliani. finally, our political roundtable weighs in on the legacy of the 9/11
